HMC Workgroup Progress Report - THEORY

February 2006

Workgroup Title:                     Operationalizing Theory to Interventions

Workgroup Chair/
Affiliation:
Tom Prohaska, PhD – University of Illinois, Chicago

Workgroup Purpose:
To 1) evaluate how theories are being tested across HMC, 2)  examine whether parts of different
theories can be combined and incorporated into interventions, 3)  examine what can be learned
from underlying constructs that may not be related to theory, 4) model how important components
of theories are operationalized in interventions, 5) define/illustrate for each site theories, constructs,
interventions and measures, 6) look at how outcome measures are linked to theoretical constructs,
and 7) map out how theory is linked to interventions across studies.

Progress to Date:  The primary focus of this workgroup was to produce a manuscript on operationalizing theory to intervention. No progress has been made since the last report.  This workgroup’s activities were a lower priority than those of the funded workgroups.

Challenges to Date:  None

Next Steps:  It is the intention to produce a manuscript on operationalizing theory to intervention in this next year.
